Container cuber

What fits inside the box, and what can move on the road. Two different questions, and the second one is the expensive one.

Inside dimensions are standardised and vary little. TARE does not: it changes by unit, by manufacturer and by repairs, and what governs is the CSC plate on the door of the container in front of you. The ones here are typical.

How much of yours fits, and which runs out first: the volume of the box or the weight it can legally move. No sign-up, no email.

VOLUME governs: the box fills up with 8,437 kg of payload to spare.

The road binds: 21,637 kg. A permit or a tri-axle chassis changes this figure.

This is a lower bound: pieces in straight blocks, the way a container gets loaded without thinking. A good loader squeezes in a few more; nobody fits fewer. Inside dimensions are nominal and tare varies by unit — the CSC plate on the door governs.

Payload in the box is the ISO code maximum gross mass less the tare. What the move can carry is a different thing: it is below.

Where it stops being an ordinary move

Above any of these you need a permit, an approved route, or both — and the price stops looking like ordinary drayage.

Gross combination weight
80 000 lb · 36 287 kg
Width

Height · set by each state, not federally

Tandem axle

Weight and width: 23 CFR 658, the US Interstate network. Height is set by each state, and 13 feet 6 inches is the limit in nearly all of them. Ports and states issue permits above these figures, with conditions.
